Azizi's Happy Story
Hello, I’m Azizi, I’m from Uganda and here’s my happy story...
Azizi has a different story to Annie’s, her life went from unhappy to happy, but Azizi’s went from happy, to unhappy, to happy again. He tells us his story:
“My life was happy, in a family I thought loved me, but everything changed when I was a teenager and a man came to my home claiming to be my father. I did not believe him, but my family turned against me and forced me to leave home. I was suddenly left with nowhere to live, no money, I lost everything.
A community worker from a local church saw my troubles and offered to help me. He told me about a carpentry course I could join, and he became my friend. I trained at their skills centre and they helped me find somewhere to live. The training was all free. When I finished I worked for one year with another carpenter and now rent my own workshop. My situation meant I was totally poor, but now I can manage to do things on my own. The carpentry course was good for me because I got a skill and I am able to support myself.
My workshop is very successful and I have many customers. I have been able to take on two other boys who have no families to help them and have provided them with somewhere to live. I am now married and have my children, who I love very much.
My family wants to know me, now I am successful and I am pleased as I still love them. TWAM gave me a Carpentry Kit and as my business grew more tools to help me. My situation meant I was totally poor, but now I can manage to do things on my own. The carpentry course was good for me because I am getting a skill and I am able to support myself. My life has changed completely and I am transformed.”
Azizi could easily have ended up living on the streets and getting involved in the many street gangs that thrive on desperate young people. But, thankfully he is a fine and very enthusiastic young man with a very happy story! His Carpentry Kit cost just £40 from volunteer collectors picking up donated tools, to refurbishment, packing into a kit and shipping to Uganda.
